Wadi Wurayah in Fujairah added to UNESCO World Heritage List

FUJAIRAH: Wadi Wurayah in Fujairah has been added to UNESCO’s World Heritage List, marking a major international achievement for the UAE.

The decision was announced during the 48th session of UNESCO’s World Heritage Committee in Busan, South Korea.

Wadi Wurayah is the third UAE site to join the World Heritage List and the first in the country to be recognised for its outstanding natural value.

Sheikh Mohammed bin Hamad bin Mohammed Al Sharqi, Crown Prince of Fujairah and ambassador of the nomination file, said the recognition reflects the UAE’s commitment to protecting its natural heritage according to the highest international standards.

He said the achievement supports the vision of Sheikh Hamad bin Mohammed Al Sharqi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Fujairah, to protect the reserve for future generations.

Wadi Wurayah is located in the Hajar Mountains and is known for its rich biodiversity, rare wildlife and permanent freshwater sources. It is also home to the UAE’s only permanent natural waterfall.

The reserve protects several rare and endangered species of plants, animals, birds, reptiles and insects.

Sheikh Salem bin Khalid Al Qassimi, Minister of Culture, said the listing strengthens the UAE’s global position in protecting natural heritage and biodiversity.

He added that the recognition would support scientific research, international partnerships and the exchange of environmental knowledge.

Asilah Abdullah Al Mualla, Director-General of the Fujairah Environment Authority, said Wadi Wurayah is one of the last well-preserved ecosystems in the dry foothills of the Hajar Mountains.

Officials said efforts would continue to protect the reserve and develop it as a global destination for nature, education and scientific research.
