Abu Dhabi: The Abu Dhabi World Amateur Jiu-Jitsu Championship kicked off on Sunday at Mubadala Arena, drawing in amateur athletes from top clubs worldwide. Part of the larger 16th Abu Dhabi World Professional Jiu-Jitsu Championship, this event celebrates the growing talent in jiu-jitsu across the globe.
Commando Group Takes the Lead
By the end of Day 1, the UAE’s Commando Group claimed the top spot on the medal table. Close behind were Kazakhstan’s National Team in second and Brazil’s Checkmat International in third. The opening day highlighted intense competition, showcasing impressive skill and dedication among participants.
Dignitaries Honor Winners
Several high-ranking officials attended the event and presented medals to the winners. Among them were Dr. Mugheer Khamis Al Khaili, Chairman of the Department of Community Development, and key members of the UAE Jiu-Jitsu Federation, including Vice Chairman Mohammed Salem Al Dhaheri and Board Member Yousef Abdullah Al Batran.
Expanded Amateur Competition
For the first time, the Abu Dhabi World Professional Jiu-Jitsu Championship has set aside two full days for amateur athletes. On the first day, adult competitors aged 18 and older with white and blue belts competed. On Day 2, the master category (ages 30+) will compete at the same belt levels.
Dr. Mugheer Al Khaili praised this year’s event, emphasizing the UAE’s support for jiu-jitsu and the positive qualities the sport fosters, such as teamwork and discipline. “With thousands of athletes from around the world, including 60% from outside the UAE, this championship highlights the UAE’s role in advancing jiu-jitsu on the global stage,” he noted.
UAE Jiu-Jitsu Federation’s Vision
Mohamed Hussein Al Marzouqi, Director of the Championship and Marketing Director for the UAE Jiu-Jitsu Federation, highlighted that adding two days for amateur competitions reflects the sport’s growing popularity. He explained that this move allows athletes of all ages to experience a professional championship setting, build skills, and connect with others from around the world.
Al Marzouqi added that this approach aligns with the UAE Jiu-Jitsu Federation’s commitment to creating opportunities for everyone, regardless of age or skill level. The championship, he said, serves as a platform for athletes to grow in confidence and develop vital mental and social skills, positively impacting their personal and professional lives.
