BAKU: The UAE has announced a groundbreaking initiative at COP29, unveiling plans to develop the world’s first ChatGPT-powered tool specifically designed for the agricultural community.

Mariam bint Mohammed Saeed Hareb Almheiri, Head of the International Affairs Office in the UAE Presidential Court, made the announcement during a session titled “In Partnering to Create AI-based Public Goods for One Billion+ Smallholders”. The tool, dubbed CHAG (Chat + Ag), aims to revolutionize farming practices, especially for small-scale farmers facing challenging weather conditions.

How CHAG Will Help Farmers

CHAG will use over 50 years of research data to provide practical, AI-powered insights. Farmers will receive tailored advice on planting, harvesting, and adapting to weather changes, making it easier to make informed decisions.

“This is not just a general weather forecast,” said Celeste Saulo, Secretary General of the World Meteorological Organisation. “It’s actionable information powered by AI, designed to directly support farmers.”

UAE’s Leadership in Climate Tech

Sheikha Shamma bint Sultan bin Khalifa Al Nahyan, President and CEO of UAE Independent Climate Change Accelerators (UICCA), emphasized the UAE’s leadership in addressing climate challenges. Speaking at another session, she highlighted efforts to reduce carbon footprints and unlock sustainable finance through initiatives like the ALTÉRRA fund.

Fanny Modin of Seagrass-E.ON praised the UAE’s innovative approach to carbon markets, calling it a “game-changer” for green finance and sustainable growth.

AI and Innovation at the Forefront

At COP29, various sessions showcased how AI and other technologies are driving solutions to global climate and sustainability challenges:

  • Tech and Social Innovation: Zayed Sustainability Prize winners demonstrated how start-ups are addressing global climate goals with scalable tech solutions.
  • Hydrogen-Powered Aviation: French explorer Bertrand Piccard presented plans to fly a hydrogen-powered plane around the globe, calling hydrogen the future of aviation.
  • Food Resilience Through AI: Discussions highlighted how AI can strengthen food production and supply chains to boost resilience against climate challenges.

Building a Sustainable Future

Nadia Rouchdy, Head of Climate at Emirates Nature-WWF, praised UAE-based companies for using AI to address emissions and engage supply chains in sustainable practices.

“Decarbonization takes time, but with accurate data and strong collaborations, progress is achievable,” she said.

Looking Ahead

The UAE concluded its COP29 events by presenting tools like the National MRV-Transparency System, which monitors greenhouse gas emissions and air quality. A Changemaker Majlis, hosted by Masdar and the Mohamed bin Zayed University of AI, discussed how AI can accelerate the energy transition globally.

With initiatives like CHAG and a focus on innovation, the UAE continues to lead efforts to combat climate change and support communities worldwide.
