UAE Tops MENA in WEF 2024 Tourism Ranking
UAE: The UAE has ranked first in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region and 18th globally in the WEF 2024 Tourism Ranking Index (TTDI). This achievement highlights the UAE’s commitment to enhancing its tourism sector.
According to the report, the UAE raised its score by 4.4 percent in the 2024 index, climbing seven places from its 25th global ranking in 2021. The TTDI ranks 119 economies based on factors including enabling environment, travel and tourism policy, infrastructure, resources like nature and culture, and the sustainability of the travel and tourism sector.
UAE Climbs WEF Tourism Ranking
The index provides a strategic benchmarking tool for companies, governments, and international organizations to develop the travel and tourism sector. The United States topped the index, followed by Spain and Japan, maintaining their previous rankings. The UAE and Saudi Arabia were the only high-income economies among the top ten that showed the most improvement in performance between 2019 and 2024.
The Middle East witnessed the highest recovery rates in international tourist arrivals, 20 percent above 2019 levels. Europe, Africa, and the Americas showed a strong rebound, regaining 90 percent of 2023 movement compared to pre-COVID-19 levels.
“This year represents a turning point for the travel and tourism sector,” said Francisco Betti, Head of the Global Industries Team and Member of the Executive Committee at the World Economic Forum.
Surge in Global Tourism Demand
The report anticipates, moreover, that the global tourism industry will not only recover from its COVID-19 lows but even surpass pre-crisis levels. This resurgence will be driven by a surge in worldwide demand for travel experiences. Coinciding with this demand are several factors: more available air travel, improved international openness, and an increased interest in, and investment towards, natural and cultural attractions.
The UAE’s significant climb in the WEF tourism ranking underscores the effectiveness of its strategic efforts to boost the tourism sector. These efforts include investments in infrastructure, the implementation of policies specifically designed to promote tourism, and a strong focus on sustainability. As a result, the UAE has positioned itself as a leader in the MENA region.
The Travel & Tourism Development Index serves as a critical tool for measuring progress and setting future goals. The UAE’s rise in the rankings reflects its dedication to creating a robust, attractive, and sustainable tourism industry.
In conclusion, the UAE’s top ranking in the MENA region and its substantial climb in the global tourism index highlight its success in developing a world-class tourism sector. This achievement not only enhances the UAE’s global standing but also contributes to its economic growth and cultural exchange.
