ABU DHABI: The UAE has made remarkable progress in 2024 by launching several ambitious infrastructure projects aimed at boosting economic growth and supporting diverse industries.

Barakah Nuclear Energy Plant Fully Operational

A key milestone this year was the start of commercial operations for Unit 4 of the Barakah Nuclear Energy Plant. This achievement marks the plant’s full delivery, generating 40 terawatt-hours (TWh) of clean, carbon-free electricity annually—enough to supply 25% of the UAE’s energy needs.

Strengthening Water Infrastructure

The Executive Committee of the Initiatives of His Highness the President approved a comprehensive water infrastructure plan. This includes:

  • Nine new dams and the expansion of two existing ones.
  • Water canals spanning 9 km and embankments to enhance resilience against climate change.
  • Storage capacity to collect up to 8 million cubic meters of rain and floodwaters.
    These projects, scheduled for completion within 19 months, aim to secure water reserves and reduce climate-related risks.

AED66 Billion Infrastructure Push in Abu Dhabi

Abu Dhabi launched 144 projects with a budget of AED66 billion, focusing on:

  • Housing and education projects.
  • Enhancements in tourism and natural resources.
  • Improved transport systems, such as the 25-km median islands project, designed to handle 8,000–10,000 vehicles per hour.
    Other upgrades include new bridges on Abu Dhabi-Al Ain Road (E22) and traffic improvements on key roads.

Dubai Unveils Mega Projects

Dubai announced several transformative initiatives, including:

  1. World’s Largest Airport:
    • Al Maktoum International Airport will cost AED128 billion, with a capacity for 260 million passengers annually.
    • Features include 400 aircraft gates and five parallel runways.
  2. Rainwater Drainage Network:
    • The AED30 billion “Tasreef” project will boost drainage capacity by 700%.
  3. Dubai Exhibition Centre Expansion:
    • The centre will host over 600 major events annually by 2033.
  4. New Bridge on Hessa Street:
    • A two-lane bridge cutting travel time from 15 minutes to 3 minutes.

Green Initiatives and Energy Development in Sharjah

Sharjah launched two irrigation projects, modernizing pumping stations for landscaping. Additionally, 9.5 km of main roads were completed in the Al Sajaah Industrial Area.

Ajman Expands Energy and Road Networks

Etihad Water and Electricity (EtihadWE) inaugurated two energy stations in Ajman, with investments of AED137 million and AED61 million. The emirate also completed 10 km of internal roads in key residential areas.

Umm Al Qaiwain’s Desalination and Logistics Projects

The NAQA’A Seawater Reverse Osmosis plant, among the largest globally, opened with a daily capacity of 150 million gallons of desalinated water. Additionally, the Logistics City and Umm Al Qaiwain Cargo Airport were launched.

New Water Facilities in Ras Al Khaimah and Fujairah

Ras Al Khaimah introduced the Al Ghail Pumping Station for AED122 million, while Fujairah upgraded the Al-Nujaymat Main Station with state-of-the-art equipment for the same investment amount.

The UAE’s 2024 infrastructure projects underline its commitment to innovation, sustainability, and enhancing the quality of life for its residents. These initiatives not only meet current needs but also prepare the nation for a prosperous future.
