UAE Heatwave Prompts Calls for Caution in Sports Activities
UAE: Soaring temperatures in the UAE, reaching close to 50°C, have sparked concerns about the safety of outdoor sports. Heatstroke, a potentially life-threatening condition, is a growing risk as residents continue to participate in strenuous activities under the harsh sun.
Doctors Urge Caution
The recent death of UAE resident and amateur cricketer Mandeep Singh, following a cricket match, has highlighted the dangers of playing sports in extreme heat. Doctors advise athletes to avoid strenuous activities during peak heat hours. “Athletes are prone to heat exhaustion, and the vital sign of it is they have difficulty continuing with exercise,” explains Dr. Ahmed Mohammed Abdelrazek Deabes, a specialist internal medicine physician. Heat exhaustion, if left untreated, can progress to heatstroke, which can be fatal.
Shifting Schedules and Raising Awareness
Sports coaches are urging players to prioritize safety by rescheduling games for cooler evening hours. Gustave Tarik, a fitness coach, emphasizes the importance of exercising indoors during the hottest part of the day. “The best advice is to move all fitness activities, including sports, indoors,” he advises. Coaches are also calling for a temporary suspension of outdoor sports during the peak summer months, recommending a shift to indoor facilities.
Cost Disparity Creates Challenges
Some players report opting for cheaper daytime rentals of sports grounds, despite the health risks. “Renting fields during the day is significantly cheaper than at night,” explains Shawez, a regular cricket player. This price disparity creates a challenge in encouraging players to prioritize safety over cost.
Doctors are also calling for increased awareness of the symptoms of a potential heart attack. Dr. Rahul Chaudhary, a cardiologist, emphasizes the importance of seeking immediate medical attention for any unusual discomfort. “Seek immediate healthcare attention,” he urges, “especially if you experience any type of uneasiness which you have never experienced before in life.”
Looking Ahead: A Summer of Safety
The UAE’s scorching summer temperatures necessitate a shift in sports routines. By prioritizing safety, adopting flexible scheduling, and raising awareness of heatstroke symptoms, residents can continue to enjoy sports activities without putting their health at risk.
