UAE Celebrates Emirati Day for Education, Focuses on Bright Future for Students

Abu Dhabi: The United Arab Emirates will celebrate Emirati Day for Education on February 28. President His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan created this special day to honor the role of education in building the nation and preparing future leaders.

This date is important in UAE history. On February 28, 1982, the first group of teachers graduated from United Arab Emirates University. The UAE’s Founding Father, the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, attended the ceremony along with the Rulers of the Emirates. Because of this historic event, the country chose this day to celebrate education.

Today, Emirati Day for Education highlights the UAE’s strong plan to build one of the best education systems in the world. In fact, the country’s education goals support the UAE Centennial 2071 vision, which aims to make the nation one of the best countries globally.

In recent years, the UAE has made major changes to its schools. For example, schools now teach Artificial Intelligence, or AI, as a required subject from kindergarten to Grade 12. As a result, the UAE has become one of the first countries to teach AI at all school levels.

In addition, the country launched the Zayed Education Foundation. The foundation plans to support 100,000 talented young people by 2035. Through research and innovation, these students will help solve global challenges.

Moreover, the Mohammed bin Rashid Government Scholarships offer master’s programs in AI and public policy. At the same time, the Mohamed bin Zayed Award for Best Teacher supports outstanding educators and helps improve teaching standards across the country.

For the 2025–2026 academic year, the Ministry of Education introduced new changes to improve student life. Schools removed centralized second-semester exams. Instead, teachers now assess students at school. This change reduces stress and supports student well-being.

The Ministry also updated the curriculum for senior students. It divided Cycle 3 into advanced and general streams. Therefore, students can now choose subjects that match their future careers, such as medicine, engineering, law, or business.

At the same time, the UAE continues to protect its culture and values. All private schools must follow clear rules when teaching Arabic, Islamic studies, and national identity. In this way, students stay connected to their heritage while learning modern skills.

The UAE’s strong education system continues to grow. For instance, higher education admissions increased by 13 percent in the 2024–2025 academic year, reaching 57,037 new students. Notably, female students make up 54 percent of these enrollments. This shows strong gender balance in higher education.

Today, more than one million students study across the UAE. In addition, 23,000 teachers have completed training in modern AI-based teaching methods. Because of these efforts, the UAE continues to invest in knowledge and skills for future generations.

As the country marks Emirati Day for Education, it strengthens its position as a global center for learning, innovation, and opportunity.
