The UAE, in partnership with the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), hosted a special session focused on promoting gender equity and clean energy transitions. This event, held at the Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) Sustainability and Innovation Centre, coincided with the 16th anniversary of IRENA’s foundation and the International Day of Clean Energy.

The session, part of the Women in Diplomacy and Renewables Talk initiatives, highlighted the UAE’s commitment to advancing gender equality in leadership roles and achieving global climate goals, including those pledged at COP28.

Empowering Women for a Sustainable Future

The event brought together Permanent Representatives to IRENA, diplomats, and energy leaders to discuss progress, share best practices, and refine strategies for gender equity in clean energy. Participants explored ways to drive inclusive leadership and accelerate the global energy transition, setting the stage for future discussions ahead of COP30 in Belém, Brazil.

In her opening remarks, Dr. Amna bint Abdulla Al Dahak, UAE Minister of Climate Change and Environment, emphasized the importance of inclusion:
“As we mark IRENA’s 16th anniversary on the International Day of Clean Energy, the UAE reaffirms its dedication to a fair and inclusive energy transition. Empowering women unlocks the full potential of the global energy sector and is key to achieving sustainable development.”

IRENA’s Call for Global Action

IRENA Director-General Francesco La Camera thanked the UAE for its leadership, saying:
“Renewables have immense potential to combat climate change and drive sustainable development. However, the uneven distribution of renewable energy remains a major challenge, especially in the Global South. Urgent action is needed to address systemic barriers, improve infrastructure, and increase investment to ensure a fair energy transition for all.”

Exploring Renewable Innovations in Dubai

Delegates concluded the session with a tour of the DEWA Sustainability and Innovation Centre, located at the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park—the largest single-site solar park in the world. They explored cutting-edge renewable technologies and energy efficiency solutions showcased at the site.

The UAE’s enduring partnership with IRENA highlights its role as a global leader in fostering meaningful dialogue, advancing gender equity, and championing clean energy initiatives for a sustainable future.
