Abu Dhabi: The Sports Coordination Council held its first meeting of 2026 under the chairmanship of Sports Minister Ahmad Belhoul Al Falasi, with top sports leaders and government officials taking part. The meeting focused on improving sports rules, fair elections in sports bodies, and the UAE’s growing role in global sports events.
During the session, the UAE National Olympic Committee reviewed new rules for forming a central elections committee and a single appeals committee for sports federations. Officials said having one clear set of election rules will help make the system fair, transparent, and equal for everyone. These rules will follow international Olympic standards and best global practices.
The committee explained that the updated system matches the Olympic Charter, international federation rules, national laws, and the committee’s own regulations. This will help sports groups stay independent and well managed.
The Council also discussed the UAE’s participation in the Winter Olympic Games being held in Milan and Cortina d’Ampezzo from February 6 to 22. Members described the country’s first participation in the Winter Games as an important milestone that shows how much the UAE sports sector has grown. The UAE is represented by athletes Alexander Astridge and Piera Hudson in alpine skiing events.
Al Falasi confirmed that the Ministry of Sports and the National Olympic Committee will continue to support athletes and sports federations in international competitions. He said the Council plays an important role in bringing sports organizations together and building a strong national sports system.
He added that sports plans across the country are being aligned with the goals of the 2026 Year of Family. The aim is to encourage families and communities to take part in sports and make activities open to all age groups.
Ghanim Mubarak Al Hajeri, Under-Secretary of the Ministry of Sports, said that reviewing election rules shows a strong commitment to transparency, fairness, and good governance. He noted that unified rules help sports organizations perform better and reach higher standards.
Faris Al Mutawa, Secretary-General of the UAE National Olympic Committee, said cooperation between sports bodies is key to growing the Olympic movement in the country. He stressed the need for independence, openness, and proper governance in line with international standards.
The Council also reviewed other agenda items and called for continued coordination among all member entities. Officials said this teamwork will support the UAE National Sports Strategy 2031 and strengthen the country’s position in regional and international sports.
