Spain players celebrate after winning the 2026 FIFA World Cup final against Argentina

NEW YORK, July 20: Spain won the 2026 FIFA World Cup after beating Argentina 1-0 in a dramatic final that went into extra time. Ferran Torres scored the only goal of the match in the 106th minute at New York New Jersey Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey.

The result gave Spain their second men’s World Cup title. The country first won the famous trophy in South Africa in 2010. Spain controlled much of the match and created several chances, but Argentina’s defence and goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez kept the score at 0-0 during the first 90 minutes.

Argentina were reduced to 10 players after Enzo Fernandez received a red card. Soon after, substitute Ferran Torres found the net and gave Spain the lead. Argentina tried to score before the final whistle, but Spain’s defence remained strong and protected the 1-0 advantage.

Spanish players also received three major individual awards after the final. Midfielder Rodri won the Golden Ball, which is given to the best player of the tournament. Goalkeeper Unai Simon received the Golden Glove award after a strong World Cup campaign.

Young defender Pau Cubarsi was named the tournament’s Best Young Player. France forward Kylian Mbappe won the Golden Boot as the competition’s leading goalscorer.

Several world leaders and senior officials watched the final from the stadium. They included US President Donald Trump, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney and FIFA President Gianni Infantino.

Trump and Infantino later joined the medal and trophy presentation ceremony.

The 2026 tournament was the largest FIFA World Cup ever held. It included 48 national teams and was hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico. Spain ended the tournament as champions after showing strong teamwork, careful defending and attacking football. The victory also ended Argentina’s time as defending champions. Argentina had won the previous World Cup in Qatar in 2022.
