Sheikh Mohammed Approves AED30 Billion Project to Enhance Rainwater Drainage Network
Dubai, UAE: Dubai has approved an integrated project, ‘Tasreef,’ to develop the emirate’s rainwater drainage network, costing AED30 billion. The project was announced by Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai.
The new network will increase Dubai’s rainwater drainage capacity by 700% and “enhance the emirate’s readiness to face future climate challenges,” according to Sheikh Mohammed. It will collect over 20 million cubic meters of water per day, serving Dubai’s needs “for the next hundred years.” Sheikh Mohammed stated the project will “cover all areas of Dubai” and absorb more rainfall than existing infrastructure. Work will begin “immediately” and be carried out in stages concluding in 2033.
Boosting Rainwater Drainage to Enhance Sustainability
Dubai will “maintain its infrastructure and urban gains” through the rainwater drainage network. Sheikh Mohammed added it will “enhance safety and security for everyone living on its land.” The project will utilize the latest Tunnel Boring Machines (TBM), the largest in the Middle East, known for their efficiency and speed. The initiative aligns with the Municipality’s strategic goals for the integrated management of rainwater drainage and the sewage system, underscoring its commitment to infrastructure projects that enhance sustainability and quality of life in Dubai.
The project supports Dubai’s plans and strategies for developing a flexible, advanced, and future-ready infrastructure. As a sustainable strategic project, it addresses future climate change impacts, such as increased rainfall, with a network designed to seamlessly adapt to all rainfall events. The ‘Tasreef’ project aims to enhance rainwater drainage services with a sophisticated and highly efficient infrastructure, improving operational efficiencies and reducing costs.
