Sharjah Public Libraries Celebrates 100 Years of Cultural Contributions

Sharjah is celebrating a historic milestone as Sharjah Public Libraries (SPL) marks its 100th anniversary this year. The celebrations, guided by His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Member of the Supreme Council and Ruler of Sharjah, and supervised by Sheikha Bodour bint Sultan Al Qasimi, Chairperson of the Sharjah Book Authority (SBA), will last throughout 2025. The events will honor the emirate’s century-long journey of cultural and intellectual achievements.

Honoring a Legacy of Knowledge

The centennial celebrations will start on January 29, 2025, at Sharjah Fort (Al Hisn). This historic location is where the UAE’s first public library was established in 1925 by Sheikh Sultan bin Saqr Al Qasimi. Initially named Al Qasimia Library, it operated inside the fort before transforming into the central pillar of Sharjah’s cultural identity.

In 2011, the library was renamed Sharjah Public Libraries and relocated to the Cultural Palace Square, solidifying its status as a hub for knowledge, learning, and innovation.

A Year of Special Activities

SPL has planned a variety of events throughout 2025 to celebrate its centenary. The agenda, developed in collaboration with over 13 government entities, focuses on four key themes:

  1. Literary Beginnings – Exploring the library’s history and early contributions.
  2. Cultural Civilisation – Highlighting Sharjah’s role in advancing global culture.
  3. Horizons of Literature and Poetry – Celebrating the impact of literature and poetry.
  4. Cultural Sustainability – Emphasizing the role of libraries in future development.

Libraries as Cornerstones of Progress

Sheikha Bodour Al Qasimi emphasized that this celebration reflects the emirate’s dedication to knowledge and cultural growth.

“Books and knowledge are the foundation of strong and thriving nations,” she said. “This centennial is a tribute to the vision of our ancestors, who prioritized learning and libraries. Their efforts built a legacy that continues to inspire future generations. Libraries are not only cultural resources but also key drivers of progress.”

She also noted that Sharjah has consistently championed the role of libraries, making them symbols of global cultural leadership.

A Journey of Growth and Transformation

The story of SPL reflects a rich legacy of evolution. Established by Sheikh Sultan bin Saqr Al Qasimi, the library began in the Sharjah Fort as a private collection. Over the decades, it moved to several locations, including Africa Hall and Sharjah Cultural Centre, before finding its current home in the Cultural Palace Square in 2011.

Each step in this journey shows Sharjah’s dedication to creating spaces where knowledge is accessible to all.

A Vision for the Future

As SPL celebrates 100 years, it looks ahead to shaping future generations by inspiring a love for knowledge and preserving cultural heritage. The centennial celebration not only honors the past but also reinforces Sharjah’s commitment to cultural innovation and sustainability.

Stay tuned for the exciting events planned throughout the year as Sharjah celebrates a century of empowering communities through knowledge.
