Saudi Design Talent Flourishes at Tanween Challenge

Saudi Arabia’s creative sector is thriving, as Saudi Design Talent evidenced by the recent Tanween Challenge winners. Hosted by the King Abdulaziz Center for World Culture (Ithra), the annual competition fosters innovation in design solutions for nature-related challenges.

This year’s Tanween Challenge saw four projects win across four categories: graphic design, pavilion design, furniture design, and fashion design. Tanween, Ithra’s flagship program since 2019, provides a platform for designers from the Middle East and North Africa to showcase their talent and develop their ideas.

Competition Winners

The winning projects of Saudi Design Talent in the Tanween Challenge will receive support from Ithra’s partners to bring their designs to life. These innovative ideas have the potential to make a positive impact on the environment and our relationship with nature.

  • Graphic Design Challenge: “Eyes Wide Open” uses data visualization to depict the impact of air pollution.
  • Pavilion Design Challenge: “The Determinal” deconstructs the traditional airport experience through a unique steel structure.
  • Furniture Design Challenge: “Bloom” is a nature-inspired bench that provides a haven for both humans and wildlife.
  • Fashion Design Challenge: “MRG” creates a biodegradable bag using sustainable materials like sea salt and fish scales.

Focusing on Sustainability

Several of the Tanween Challenge categories placed an emphasis on sustainability. The “City Breathe” challenge specifically asked participants to design a pavilion made from repurposed industrial waste that could purify urban air. The “Furniture Design Challenge” encouraged the use of locally sourced, waste-based materials. These design solutions promote a more responsible approach to our relationship with the environment.

The winning projects will be showcased at the upcoming Tanween Conference, held at Ithra headquarters from November 1-4, 2024. This event provides a valuable platform for designers to connect with industry professionals and the public.

The Tanween Challenge is a testament to the creativity and innovation flourishing in Saudi Arabia’s design sector. By supporting these talented individuals, Ithra is helping to shape a more sustainable and beautiful future.
