Dar Waraqa, a Saudi Arabian publishing house, is on a mission to create a “golden age” of children’s literature in the Kingdom. Founded by Layal Idriss, the company produces award-winning books and products that celebrate Saudi culture and heritage.

Culturally-Rich Stories for Arab Children

Idriss, a passionate storyteller and entrepreneur, is driven by a desire to provide Arab children with high-quality art and innovative stories. She highlights the importance of featuring relatable heroes and cultural references in children’s books.

Creating a Publishing Powerhouse

Located in Jeddah, Dar Waraqa offers a full range of publishing services, from concept development to distribution. The company collaborates closely with the creative agency Radish House, selecting artists and creating a space for young talent to flourish.

Unique Storytelling Process

Dar Waraqa’s storytelling process starts with in-house brainstorming, emphasizing originality and fresh ideas. Once a strong foundation is established, they partner with talented authors, primarily Saudis, but also including international voices when needed.

“Aklana” Series: A Culinary Adventure

An example of Dar Waraqa’s success is the “Aklana” series, a collaboration with the Saudi Culinary Commission. These books highlight traditional recipes and stories from each of the Kingdom’s 13 provinces. The series aims to preserve culinary heritage in a fun and informative way, fostering a love for Saudi food culture in young readers.

“Aklana” is already making waves internationally, with translations into Mandarin Chinese and Korean. The publisher plans to translate the entire series into various languages, introducing the world to the rich tapestry of Saudi culture and cuisine.

Engaging Young Minds

Beyond publishing, Dar Waraqa is committed to creating interactive experiences for children. Their collaboration with Ithra at the Eastern Region Book Fair in 2023 attracted over 10,000 attendees.

Dar Waraqa’s dedication to innovation and cultural enrichment positions it as a leader in Saudi children’s literature. The company’s efforts are sure to inspire future generations and contribute to a “golden age” of creativity in the Kingdom.
