Saudi Arabia Pursues Peaceful Use of Outer Space at UN Committee Meeting
Saudi Arabia: The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia recently concluded its participation in the 67th session of the UN Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space (COPUOS), demonstrating its commitment to international collaboration in space exploration. Held in Vienna, Austria, from June 19 to 28, the committee serves as a key forum for discussing peaceful and sustainable uses of outer space.
Saudi Delegation Highlights Progress and Collaboration
Beyond simply attending the COPUOS session, Saudi Arabia actively participated in discussions and events. The Saudi delegation hosted a side meeting titled “The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia Towards Space: Stimulating the Space Sector.” This event, attended by over 80 space leaders and experts, focused on fostering promising collaborations to propel the global space industry forward.
Dr. Abdullah bin Khaled Toula, the Kingdom’s permanent representative to the UN in Vienna, emphasized the importance of international cooperation in ensuring the long-term growth and sustainability of space exploration. He highlighted Saudi Arabia’s progress in developing its space sector, including initiatives like the Space Debris Conference held in February 2024, which aimed to promote space sustainability.
Committee Promotes Peaceful Space Exploration
Established by the UN General Assembly in 1959, COPUOS plays a critical role in governing the exploration and use of outer space for peaceful purposes. The committee’s mandate includes reviewing international cooperation in space exploration, encouraging space research programs, and studying legal issues arising from space activities. By facilitating collaboration and promoting peaceful uses of space, COPUOS works to ensure that space exploration benefits all of humanity.
Saudi Arabia’s participation in COPUOS signifies its growing role in the international space community. Through active engagement and a focus on collaboration, the Kingdom is well-positioned to contribute to the peaceful and sustainable exploration of space for the betterment of humankind.
