Saudi Arabia Achieves Highest International Tourism Growth Among G20 Nations in 2024

Riyadh: Saudi Arabia has recorded the fastest growth in international tourism among the G20 nations during the first seven months of 2024, according to the latest data from the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO). The Kingdom’s robust performance underscores its rapid emergence as a global tourism powerhouse, thanks to the ambitious goals of Saudi Vision 2030.

Remarkable Growth in Tourist Numbers and Revenue

The UNWTO’s September 2024 World Tourism Barometer report highlights that Saudi Arabia saw a remarkable 73% surge in international tourist arrivals compared to the same period in 2019. In addition to this, the Kingdom achieved an astounding 207% growth in international tourism revenues, solidifying its position as a top global tourist destination.

During the first seven months of this year alone, Saudi Arabia welcomed approximately 17.5 million international visitors, reflecting the growing appeal of the Kingdom’s tourism sector on the global stage.

Building on 2023 Success

In 2023, Saudi Arabia recorded a total of 27.4 million international tourists, representing a 56% increase compared to 2019. This impressive growth positioned the Kingdom at the top of the UNWTO’s list of major tourist destinations for 2023. Moreover, the tourism sector’s strong performance translated into a historic SAR48 billion surplus in the travel item, marking a 38% year-on-year increase.

IMF Acknowledges Saudi Arabia’s Tourism Success

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) praised Saudi Arabia’s tourism sector in its 2024 Article IV Consultation report. The IMF highlighted the tourism sector’s pivotal role in diversifying the Kingdom’s economy, particularly in expanding its services sector. Tourism has become a key contributor to economic growth, generating jobs, boosting visitor spending, and significantly enhancing the country’s GDP.
