Road-Cooling Tech to Provide Hajj Pilgrims Respite from Heat

Riyadh Saudi Arabia: Innovative road-cooling technology will enhance the Hajj experience by providing relief from intense summer heat. This new technology is part of Saudi Arabia’s ongoing efforts to improve infrastructure and services for millions of pilgrims.

Abdulaziz Al-Otaibi, a spokesman for the Roads General Authority (RGA), explained the benefits: “Roads absorb heat, reaching up to 70 degrees Celsius once the sun sets.” This heat emission leads to the heat island phenomenon. The new cooling material absorbs less solar radiation, significantly reducing heat absorption and retention.

Impact of Road-Cooling Tech on Pilgrims

Al-Otaibi added, “This cooling material reflects the sun’s rays, lowering road temperatures by 12 to 15 degrees Celsius.” This reduction makes the roads cooler and more pleasant for pilgrims, improving their overall experience.

The road-cooling technology is part of Saudi Arabia’s broader efforts to enhance infrastructure and services for Hajj. Last year, the technology was successfully tested in the Jamarat corridors. The project is now expanding to areas in Mina, Arafat, and Muzdalifah, including 25,000 square meters near Namira Mosque in Arafat.

Saudi Arabia’s Commitment to Hajj Infrastructure

The innovative substance was developed with organizations such as the Ministry of Hajj and Umrah, the Ministry of Municipal and Rural Affairs and Housing, the Pilgrim Experience Program, and the Quality of Life Program. The material is produced under the RGA’s research center umbrella.

By implementing road-cooling technology in key areas of Makkah, the Saudi government aims to create a more hospitable environment for pilgrims. These efforts ensure their journey to the holy city is smooth and comfortable.

Al-Otaibi emphasized, “This cooling material reduces asphalt surface temperatures by 20 percent compared to untreated roads.” The technology is a testament to Saudi Arabia’s proactive measures to improve Hajj infrastructure and services, setting a precedent for other countries in ensuring the safety and comfort of religious visitors.

Saudi Arabia continues to lead in enhancing the Hajj experience, demonstrating its commitment to the well-being of millions of pilgrims who visit Makkah each year.
