PSMMC Reaches Medical Milestone with First-of-Its-Kind Bone Marrow Transplant
Riyadh: Prince Sultan Military Medical City (PSMMC) has achieved a remarkable medical breakthrough by successfully performing a bone marrow transplant for a young girl diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia. The donor was the patient’s sibling, and the procedure led to her full recovery. She has been discharged in good health, marking a significant achievement for the hospital.
Advanced Radiation Therapy Used for the First Time in the Region
The medical team utilized cutting-edge VMAT (Volumetric Modulated Arc Therapy) technology for total body irradiation. This innovative technique is a first in the Middle East for pediatric cases. Unlike traditional methods that require repositioning during treatment, VMAT allows children to remain in one position, making the procedure more effective and comfortable.
This advanced therapy was supervised by PSMMC’s Radiation Therapy and Medical Physics departments, showcasing the hospital’s commitment to pioneering healthcare solutions.
New Program to Tackle Various Conditions
This success marks the beginning of PSMMC’s pediatric bone marrow transplant program. The initiative will focus on treating a range of conditions such as:
- Acute leukemia
- Hereditary blood disorders
- Autoimmune diseases
- Immunodeficiency disorders
PSMMC’s achievement highlights its dedication to providing advanced medical care and improving patient outcomes in the region.
