The Sultanate of Oman recently celebrated World Seafarers’ Day, emphasizing the maritime sector’s critical role in the nation’s logistics system. The Ministry of Transport, Communications and Information Technology spearheaded the event, recognizing the vital contributions of seafarers.

Oman’s Maritime Legacy

The celebration serves as a tribute to Oman’s rich maritime history. The Ministry acknowledges the maritime sector’s crucial role in the nation’s economy, emphasizing its contribution to the GDP and job creation.

Focus on Seafarer Development and Safety

Captain Majid bin Saif bin Mohammed Al Barahi, Director General of Maritime Affairs, highlighted the Ministry’s commitment to seafarers’ well-being. Efforts include organizing and developing the maritime transport sector, enhancing maritime safety and security, and protecting the marine environment. The Ministry also prioritizes seafarer development by enacting legislation and complying with international maritime agreements.

Modernization and International Collaboration

Oman’s commitment to the maritime sector extends to legal modernization. The recent update to the Maritime Law aligns the nation with international maritime conventions and promotes investment opportunities aligned with Oman Vision 2040. Furthermore, Oman’s accession to the International Association of Marine Aids to Navigation and Lighthouse Authorities (IALA) strengthens its presence in the global maritime community.
