Talks Focus on Space, Technology, and Entrepreneurship

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi met with Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk in Washington on Thursday. The two leaders discussed ways to strengthen cooperation in space, mobility, and emerging technologies, according to India’s foreign ministry.

“Their discussion also covered opportunities to deepen cooperation in entrepreneurship, innovation, and good governance,” the ministry said in a statement.

Starlink’s Entry into India Under Discussion

Musk’s SpaceX-owned Starlink has been eager to launch its satellite internet services in India. However, regulatory challenges have delayed its entry. Recently, Starlink has faced opposition from Indian billionaire Mukesh Ambani’s company regarding the allocation of spectrum for satellite services.

India’s government has supported Musk’s stance, favoring spectrum allocation over auctions, though Starlink’s license is still under review. The final decision on Starlink is expected to have a significant impact on India’s satellite internet sector and its future role in the global space industry.

India’s Growing Role in Space and Technology

India has been strengthening its space partnerships with the United States. In 2023, during a visit to Washington, Modi signed the Artemis Accords, a global framework for space exploration and lunar activities.

Musk, a key figure in global space innovation, leads SpaceX, which operates the world’s largest satellite network and provides launch services through Falcon 9 rockets. His company plays a crucial role in space access for Western nations.

Modi’s US Visit: Trade Talks Expected

During his two-day visit, Modi is also expected to meet US President Donald Trump, with trade and tariff agreements expected to be key discussion points. However, sources indicate he is unlikely to meet other business leaders during this trip.

India’s Future in Space and Technology

India’s regulatory decisions on space-based communications and satellite internet will shape its commercial space sector and global competitiveness. As India continues to expand its technological footprint, partnerships with companies like Tesla and SpaceX could play a major role in its innovation and digital transformation.
