Masdar and Bapco Join Forces to Develop Up to 2 Gigawatts of Wind Power in Bahrain
Masdar, a leading clean energy company based in Abu Dhabi, has recently entered into a significant partnership with Bapco Energies, Bahrain’s premier integrated energy company. The collaboration focuses on the exploration and investment in wind energy initiatives in Bahrain, with a potential capacity of up to 2 gigawatts (GW).
This strategic agreement marks Masdar’s inaugural foray into the Bahraini market, signaling a pivotal moment in the region’s renewable energy landscape. The partnership aims to develop both near-shore and offshore wind farms, marking a groundbreaking endeavor in both Bahrain and the wider Middle East.
This clean energy collaboration, boasting a potential capacity of 2GW, is poised to catalyze Bahrain’s efforts towards decarbonization, particularly within key industrial sectors. Bahrain’s National Energy Strategy outlines ambitious targets, including achieving net-zero emissions by 2060 and a 30% reduction in emissions by 2035. Masdar’s CEO, Mohamed Jameel Al Ramahi, reiterated the company’s commitment to supporting these goals, leveraging its extensive experience in delivering wind projects globally.
Bapco Energies’ Group CEO, Mark Thomas, underscored the significance of the partnership in advancing Bahrain’s energy transition. He emphasized the strategic importance of diversifying the nation’s energy mix with cleaner sources and aligning with the goals outlined in the National Energy Strategy.
Masdar’s impressive track record includes landmark wind projects such as the Dumat Al Jandal wind farm in Saudi Arabia, the London Array offshore wind project in the UK, and the UAE Wind program. These initiatives underscore Masdar’s commitment to renewable energy development on a global scale.
With an ambitious target of achieving a 100GW renewable energy portfolio capacity by 2030, Masdar is poised to lead the charge in the global energy transition.
