Mangrove Forests: A Key Focus at Saudi Green Initiative Talks
Mangrove Forests: A Key Focus at Saudi Green Initiative Talks, SPA
The Saudi Green Initiative Talks, held in Riyadh, highlighted the vital role of mangrove forests and other coastal ecosystems in combating climate change. These ecosystems play a critical role in carbon sequestration and biodiversity conservation.
Mangroves and Blue Carbon: A Powerful Duo
A session titled “Harnessing Blue Carbon: Coastal and Marine Ecosystems in Carbon Sequestration” brought together experts, including Dr. Nathalie Hilmi, Section Head of Environmental Economics at Monaco Scientific Center and Lead Author at IPCC, and Rana Al-Yemeni, Project Manager at the Saudi Green Initiative.
Mangrove Forest Benefits
Dr. Hilmi explained the incredible carbon absorption capacity of mangroves, which can store up to ten times more carbon than terrestrial forests. She also emphasized their multiple benefits, such as:
- Coastal Protection: Acting as natural barriers against storms and erosion.
- Water Purification: Improving water quality by filtering pollutants.
- Biodiversity Conservation: Supporting marine life and preserving species diversity.
“Mangroves are more than just carbon storage; they’re essential for ecosystem health and economic value,” said Dr. Hilmi.
Collaborative Efforts in Saudi Arabia
Dr. Hilmi also discussed her collaboration with King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST) to assess the carbon storage potential of Saudi Arabia’s mangrove forests.
Saudi Green Initiative Goals and Achievements
Saudi Arabia has set ambitious environmental targets through the Saudi Green Initiative (SGI), including:
- Protecting 30% of marine and coastal areas by 2030.
- Planting over 37 million mangrove trees to date.
- Safeguarding 6,700 square kilometers of Red Sea coastline.
These achievements showcase the Kingdom’s commitment to environmental sustainability and climate action.
Looking Ahead
The Saudi Green Initiative Talks continue to address pressing environmental challenges. The upcoming sessions will focus on wildlife conservation and efforts to restore and repopulate Saudi Arabia’s nature reserves.
Mangrove forests remain at the heart of these discussions, offering hope for a sustainable future while supporting the Kingdom’s bold vision for environmental preservation.
