Riyadh, January 7, 2025: King Abdulaziz City for Science and Technology (KACST) has successfully localized and developed blue light-emitting diode (LED) technology, a major step forward for energy-efficient lighting solutions in Saudi Arabia.
This breakthrough is part of KACST’s ongoing efforts to strengthen research and innovation infrastructure. Through its Saudi Semiconductor Program, KACST has been training and qualifying national experts to design and manufacture advanced electronic chips.
Boosting Competitiveness and Sustainability
The localization of blue LED technology enhances Saudi Arabia’s position in global markets while supporting the goals of Saudi Vision 2030. It contributes to industrial and technological leadership, diversifies the economy, and increases local content in non-oil sectors.
Blue LEDs are game-changers in modern lighting, cutting energy use by up to 80% and achieving efficiency levels of 200 lumens per watt, compared to just 16 lumens per watt from traditional bulbs. Additionally, they last 20 times longer, reducing the frequency of replacements.
Environmental Benefits
This advanced technology also supports Saudi Arabia’s efforts to fight climate change. By reducing greenhouse gas emissions by over six times and cutting electronic waste, blue LEDs are a sustainable choice for the future. They align with global sustainability goals, helping the Kingdom lead in environmental innovation.
KACST’s success demonstrates Saudi Arabia’s commitment to energy-efficient solutions, sustainable development, and the creation of a knowledge-based economy.
