JAFZA: Jebel Ali Free Zone Explained

JAFZA: Jebel Ali Free Zone Explained

JAFZA, the Jebel Ali Free Zone, is one of the world’s oldest and largest free trade zones, built around Jebel Ali Port in Dubai. Established in 1985, it was one of the earliest large-scale free zones in the Gulf and remains a cornerstone of Dubai’s trade and logistics economy.

Why Jebel Ali was built

Jebel Ali Port, opened in the late 1970s, was constructed as the world’s largest man-made harbour, positioned to give Dubai a deep-water port capable of handling large container traffic outside the older, more congested Dubai Creek. JAFZA was created around the port to let foreign companies operate there with full ownership, tax exemptions and simplified customs, at a time when 100% foreign ownership was not generally available onshore in the UAE.

Scale and management

JAFZA hosts thousands of companies across manufacturing, logistics, trading and industrial sectors, making it one of the most economically significant free zones in the region by both company count and trade volume. It is managed by Economic Zones World, part of DP World, the Dubai-based ports and logistics operator that also runs Jebel Ali Port itself.

What companies get from JAFZA

As with other UAE free zones, JAFZA offers full foreign ownership, streamlined licensing and customs benefits for goods that move through the zone. Its specific advantage is direct integration with Jebel Ali Port: companies can locate warehousing, light manufacturing and distribution operations immediately next to one of the busiest container ports on the main east-west shipping routes.

Why JAFZA matters to the Gulf economy

JAFZA and Jebel Ali Port together are a major reason Dubai became a regional trade and re-export hub rather than relying primarily on oil revenue, which the emirate has comparatively little of next to neighbours like Abu Dhabi. The model JAFZA pioneered – foreign ownership, tax incentives and port access in one zone – was later replicated across dozens of other free zones throughout the UAE and wider Gulf.

Frequently asked questions

Is JAFZA the same as Jebel Ali Port?

No, though they are closely linked. Jebel Ali Port is the physical seaport; JAFZA is the free zone built around it where companies can operate with full foreign ownership and tax benefits. Both are ultimately connected to DP World.

What kind of companies set up in JAFZA?

Primarily companies in trading, logistics, distribution and light manufacturing that benefit from direct port access, though the zone also hosts a broader mix of industrial and commercial businesses.

How is JAFZA different from DMCC or other Dubai free zones?

Dubai has multiple free zones, each historically built around a sector or piece of infrastructure – JAFZA around the port and trade, DMCC around commodities trading, DIFC around financial services. JAFZA’s defining feature is its direct integration with Jebel Ali Port.
