Is Saudi Arabia Becoming the Solar Power Champion of the Middle East?

Saudi Arabia, a country long known for its oil, is now turning its focus to the sun. Big solar power plants are being built to help the country use more clean energy and rely less on oil. These new solar projects are part of Vision 2030 a big plan to make Saudi Arabia’s future brighter and greener.

Let’s look at the biggest solar projects that are coming soon to Saudi Arabia:

• Neom Green Hydrogen Solar Park (Tabuk) – 2,930 MW
  • This is the biggest solar project so far. It’s being built in the north of Saudi Arabia. It will help create clean hydrogen using solar energy. That’s like making a super-clean fuel from sunlight! It will be ready by 2026.

• Al Shuaibah 2 Solar Park (Makkah) – 2,060 MW
  • This huge solar power plant is being built near the holy city of Makkah. It will start working in 2025 and will give power to many homes using only sunlight.

• Al Faisaliah Solar Park (Makkah) – 2,000 MW
  • This project is still in the early planning stage, but once built, it will be one of the largest in the country. It’s expected to be working by 2027.

• Ar Rass 2 Solar Park (Al-Qassim) – 2,000 MW
  • This project is part of a new wave of clean energy and should be ready by 2026. It will help bring more green energy to the center of the country.

• Al Sadawi Solar Project (Eastern Province) – 2,000 MW
  • This solar plant will help reduce pollution by taking away 300,000 tons of CO2 each year! It will also give many people new jobs and start producing power by the end of 2024.

Besides these five, Saudi Arabia has many other solar projects coming soon:

• Saad II Solar Plant (1,125 MW) – Coming in 2026
• Al Masa’a Solar Plant (1,000 MW) – Using special panels that take sunlight from both sides
• Al Henakiyah 2 (400 MW) – Starting work by 2027
• Tabarjal Solar Plant (400 MW) – Saves over 700,000 tons of CO2
• Amaala Solar Project (250 MW) – Will also store energy in batteries to use when the sun isn’t shining

Saudi Arabia wants to make 40,000 MW of solar energy by 2030. That’s enough to power millions of homes!
