How to Wear Ihram for Men Simple Step-by-Step Guide for Hajj or Umrah

How to Wear Ihram

Wearing Ihram is the first and most important step for men before starting Hajj or Umrah. It shows that all Muslims are equal in front of Allah. Here is a simple guide to help you wear Ihram the right way.

Step 1: Get Ready

  1. Take a full shower (Ghusl) – This makes your body clean and prepares your heart and mind.
  2. Trim nails and remove hair (Optional) – Do this before wearing Ihram if needed.
  3. Use light perfume (Optional) – Only on your body, not on the cloth.

Step 2: Wear the Lower Cloth (Izar)

  • Take the first white cloth and wrap it around your waist.
  • It should cover from your waist to your ankles.
  • Tuck it in tightly so it doesn’t fall.
  • You can use a belt to keep it in place.

Step 3: Wear the Upper Cloth (Rida)

  • Take the second white cloth and place it over your shoulders.
  • Cover both shoulders and chest.
  • During Tawaf, it’s Sunnah to uncover the right shoulder (called Idtiba). After that, cover both shoulders again.

Step 4: Wear the Right Shoes

  • Wear open sandals or slippers.
  • Your ankles and top of the feet must be visible.
  • No socks or closed shoes allowed.

Step 5: Enter the State of Ihram

  • Face the Qibla (Kaaba).
  • Make the intention (Niyyah) in your heart for Hajj or Umrah.
  • Say the Talbiyah aloud: Labbaik Allahumma labbaik, labbaik la shareeka laka labbaik. Innal-hamda wan-ni‘mata laka wal-mulk, la shareeka lak.

Things You Must Not Do in Ihram

  • No perfume or scented soap
  • No cutting hair or nails
  • No arguing or fighting
  • No hunting animals
  • No covering your head
  • No stitched clothes or underwear
  • No marriage or relations

Final Note

Now you are ready to begin your holy journey. Wearing Ihram shows that we are all the same in front of Allah—humble, pure, and ready to worship.
