Riyadh: The Saudi Green Initiative Talks (SGI Talks) spotlighted groundbreaking solutions in food sustainability during a special session titled Food for Thought. The event highlighted the inspiring work of Charlot Magayi, founder of Mukuru Clean Stoves, and Prince Abdulaziz bin Saud Al Saud, co-founder of Barakah, demonstrating the power of social entrepreneurship to tackle global challenges.

Addressing Food Waste and Security

Prince Abdulaziz discussed Saudi Arabia’s significant food security challenges, where over 75% of food is imported. He also emphasized the global issue of food waste, which is responsible for about 10% of greenhouse gas emissions. Through Barakah, an innovative online platform, food retailers can reduce waste by selling surplus food safely to consumers.

“Our mission at Barakah is to create sustainable solutions in the FoodTech and AgriTech sectors,” he said. Barakah aims to save 10 million meals by 2025 while achieving net-zero emissions across its operations.

Clean Cooking Innovations for Healthier Homes

Charlot Magayi shared the journey behind Mukuru Clean Stoves, a social enterprise transforming cooking methods for families in Africa. Her stoves use 60% less fuel, cut household air pollution by 90%, and reduce burn risks.

“Growing up in a home where food was cooked on open fires inspired me to create a safer and more efficient solution,” Magayi explained. The stoves, made from recycled materials and powered by mosquito-repellent briquettes, have already prevented 930,000 tons of CO2 emissions while improving the health and lives of thousands of families.

Saudi Green Initiative’s Broader Goals

These innovative projects align with Saudi Arabia’s sustainability goals under the Saudi Green Initiative, which seeks to enhance quality of life and protect the environment.

The SGI Talks continue daily at 3 PM in the SGI Pavilion. Tomorrow’s session, Eye in the Sky, will feature sustainability experts Nora Abdulaziz AlSudairy and Walid Matar from KAPSARC.

Stay tuned for more updates on how innovative solutions are driving a greener future.
