FIFA World Cup 2026: Mexico Beat South Africa 2-0 in Strong Opening Match

MEXICO CITY: Mexico made a winning start to the FIFA World Cup 2026 after defeating South Africa 2-0 in the tournament’s opening match at Mexico City Stadium on Thursday night.
Playing in front of excited home fans, Mexico took control early and created their first big chance within five minutes. Raul Jimenez tested South African goalkeeper Ronwen Williams with a powerful header, but the captain made an excellent save.
Mexico continued to attack and found the breakthrough soon after. Midfielder Erik Lira won the ball back from South Africa’s Sphephelo Sithole, allowing Julian Quinones to score with a low shot through the goalkeeper’s legs.
South Africa, known as Bafana Bafana, managed to keep the score at 1-0 before halftime thanks to more good saves from Williams. Quinones also came close to scoring again, but his effort hit the post.
The match became more difficult for South Africa early in the second half. Sithole was shown a red card after bringing down Jimenez just outside the penalty area while the striker was running toward goal.
Mexico quickly took advantage of having an extra player. Seventeen-year-old substitute Gilberto Mora received a warm welcome from the crowd, and just one minute after entering the game, Mexico doubled its lead.
Quinones combined well with Jimenez before setting up Roberto Alvarado, whose cross found Jimenez at the far post. The experienced striker headed the ball into the net to make it 2-0.
The game ended with more drama as both teams finished with 10 players. South Africa substitute Themba Zwane and Mexico defender Cesar Montes were both sent off late in the match.
Despite the late red card, Mexico’s fans celebrated a perfect start to their FIFA World Cup 2026 campaign. With a strong performance and an important victory, El Tri have taken their first step toward the knockout stage.
