Brussels: The European Union has decided to delay imposing tariffs on goods from the United States until early August. This decision comes after the US announced plans to apply a 30 percent tariff on products from the EU.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said that the US had sent a letter outlining new measures that would begin unless both sides reach an agreement. She confirmed that the EU would extend the suspension of its countermeasures until early August, giving more time for negotiations.

This announcement followed US President Donald Trump’s statement on Saturday, where he confirmed that the 30 percent tariffs on EU imports would start on August 1st, despite ongoing talks between the two sides.

Von der Leyen made it clear that the EU would not stay inactive, and the European Commission would continue preparing additional countermeasures over the next few weeks.

Reports from the EU suggest that the planned countermeasures could target US exports worth €21 billion (around $24.5 billion).

EU trade ministers will meet in Brussels on Monday to discuss the next steps after the US’s decision over the weekend. It is still unclear whether the ministers will support von der Leyen’s choice to delay the countermeasures and allow negotiations to continue until the August 1st deadline.
