Jubail: Under the guidance of the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, Prince Saud bin Naif bin Abdulaziz, Governor of the Eastern Region, inaugurated the 6th International Conference on Learning Cities (ICLC 6).

The conference is being held in Jubail Industrial City and will run until December 5. Organized by the UNESCO Global Network of Learning Cities (GNLC), its theme is “Learning Cities at the Forefront of Climate Action”.

Education as a Tool for Climate Action

Global leaders, experts, and policymakers have come together to discuss how education can combat climate challenges. They are also exploring ways to improve quality of life through learning.

In his speech, Prince Saud emphasized Saudi Arabia’s dedication to sustainable education. He highlighted how education empowers youth, builds skills, and raises awareness about climate change. Climate challenges, he said, are no longer distant threats but urgent issues. Addressing them requires stronger local, regional, and global partnerships.

Honoring Cities for Lifelong Learning

During the opening ceremony, the UNESCO Global Network of Learning Cities Awards 2024 recognized ten cities for their contributions to sustainability and education. Yanbu Industrial City was among the winners, becoming the second Saudi city to achieve this honor after Jubail Industrial City.

UNESCO Recognizes Saudi Leadership

Isabell Kempf, Director of the UNESCO Institute for Lifelong Learning, praised Saudi Arabia’s efforts in hosting this important event. She noted that the conference highlights how learning cities can inspire sustainable practices and support climate action.

She also pointed out that UNESCO’s GNLC engages nearly 400 million people worldwide in educational programs. These initiatives promote shared goals and positive change in communities.

A Shared Commitment to a Better Future

This conference emphasizes the critical role of education in building climate resilience and creating sustainable cities. By sharing knowledge and working together, attendees aim to develop effective solutions for a healthier planet.
