Dubai: Woman sentenced to three months in jail for attempting to extort Dh1 million after affair with married man concludes

A 45-year-old beautician, charged with blackmailing a man and demanding Dh1 million to avoid tarnishing his reputation, has been given a three-month jail term. The Court has also ruled for the accused’s deportation following her prison sentence.

During the trial at the Dubai Criminal Court last Wednesday, it was revealed that the Polish defendant utilized sensitive personal information to coerce the victim, a 57-year-old Australian consultant with whom she had a romantic relationship.

According to court documents, the relationship soured when the woman discovered the man was married, prompting a confrontation where she demanded compensation.

“Despite my client’s payment of Dh300,000 in an effort to prevent his family from learning about the affair, the woman continued with her threats,” stated the man’s Emirati lawyer, Awatif Mohammad from Awatif Shoqi Advocates, during the court session.

Court records indicate that the couple met in September 2022 and parted ways in March 2023 when the man chose to prioritize his marriage and family. “She waited a month after the breakup before initiating a barrage of disrespectful messages,” the lawyer informed the court.

The beautician also persistently contacted the man, threatening to expose him if he failed to pay Dh1 million. “She obtained contact details of his wife, children, and other relatives, sending them intimate photos of the couple,” the lawyer elaborated.

The man reported the incident to the police in May of last year. Alongside the criminal case, the lawyer has filed a civil suit seeking temporary compensation of Dh51,000 for the emotional distress suffered by the client, who feared damage to his family and reputation.

The Criminal Court found the woman guilty, sentencing her to three months in prison followed by deportation. Furthermore, the civil case has been referred to the Civil Court for further proceedings.
