Dubai Police Crackdown on Begging: 202 Arrested During Ramadan
In a proactive move to curb illegal activities during the holy month of Ramadan, Dubai Police have arrested 202 beggars within the first two weeks of the fasting period. The crackdown is part of an ongoing anti-begging campaign aimed at maintaining law and order in the emirate.
Brig Ali Salem Al Shamsi, Director of the Suspects and Criminal Phenomena Department at Dubai Police, revealed that the majority of the arrested individuals entered the country on visit visas, exploiting the generosity of residents and visitors to make quick money. Among those apprehended, 112 were men and 90 were women, reflecting a diverse range of individuals involved in begging activities.
According to Dubai Police, offenders will face stringent penalties, including a minimum fine of Dh5,000 and up to three months of imprisonment. Moreover, individuals found organizing begging activities and facilitating the entry of beggars from abroad will be subject to even harsher punishments, including imprisonment for at least six months and a fine of no less than Dh100,000.
Al Shamsi emphasized the importance of public cooperation in combating begging-related crimes. He urged residents and visitors not to engage with alleged beggars out of sympathy and instead report any suspicious activities to the authorities. Citizens can report incidents by dialing 901 or using the ‘Police Eye’ service on the Dubai Police smart app.
Furthermore, Al Shamsi urged individuals to channel their generosity through legitimate charitable organizations to ensure that their contributions reach those truly in need. By supporting registered charities, residents can contribute to the well-being of the community while avoiding potential exploitation by unscrupulous individuals or groups.
The proactive measures undertaken by Dubai Police underscore the commitment to maintaining the safety and security of the emirate, particularly during significant occasions such as Ramadan. Through collaborative efforts between law enforcement agencies and the public, Dubai aims to create a conducive environment for residents and visitors alike, free from the scourge of illegal activities like begging.
