Dubai Achieves Remarkable 93% Reduction in Road Fatalities

Dubai has achieved a significant milestone in its commitment to road safety, with a remarkable 93% reduction in traffic fatalities recorded between 2007 and 2023. This achievement is a testament to the collaborative efforts of Dubai Police and the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA).

A recent meeting between Dubai Police and RTA officials highlighted the progress made under the Dubai Traffic Safety Strategy. Discussions focused on both celebrating past achievements and planning for continued safety improvements, particularly with regards to the upcoming Dubai Metro Blue Line project.

Strategic Partnership Delivers Results

Mattar Al Tayer, Director General and Chairman of the RTA, and Lieutenant General Abdullah Khalifa Al Marri, Commander-in-Chief of Dubai Police, both emphasized the importance of the strategic partnership between their organizations. This collaboration has been instrumental in achieving the impressive fatality rate reduction and fostering a strong safety culture across various modes of transportation in Dubai.

The success of the Dubai Traffic Safety Strategy hinges on four key pillars: enforcement, roads and vehicles engineering, traffic awareness, and systems and management. Through a combination of targeted enforcement initiatives, infrastructure improvements, and ongoing public awareness campaigns, Dubai has achieved significant progress towards its “Zero Fatalities” vision.

2023 Exceeds Goals

The collaborative efforts of Dubai Police and the RTA have led to surpassing the annual targets set out in the 2023 Traffic Safety Strategy. The fatality rate for 2023 reached a record low of 1.6 deaths per 100,000 people, exceeding the target of 2.0 deaths and solidifying Dubai’s position as a global leader in traffic safety.

Several strategic initiatives implemented in 2023 contributed to the reduction in traffic fatalities. These included stricter enforcement of traffic violations related to pedestrian crossings, motorcycles, bicycles, and scooters, resulting in over 500,000 issued violations. Additionally, 32 raised pedestrian crossings were constructed and improvements were made at over 200 locations frequently used by pedestrians and cyclists.

Planning for the Future: The Dubai Metro Blue Line

The recent meeting also addressed safety considerations for the upcoming Dubai Metro Blue Line project. Police and RTA officials discussed strategies to ensure the safety of passengers and assets on this new 30-kilometer metro line, featuring both elevated and underground sections and connecting nine vital areas in the city. Expected to serve over 200,000 daily passengers upon opening, the Blue Line will further enhance Dubai’s public transport network and contribute to the city’s economic development.
