DEWA CEO Saeed Al Tayer Reviews Smart Grid and Power Distribution Projects in Dubai
DUBAI, August 30, 2026: Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, Managing Director and CEO of Dubai Electricity and Water Authority, visited DEWA’s Distribution Power complex in Al Ruwayyah, Dubai, to review projects aimed at improving the reliability, efficiency and long-term performance of the emirate’s electricity distribution network.
Al Tayer was accompanied by Rashid Bin Humaidan, Executive Vice President of Distribution Power at DEWA, along with senior officials from the authority.
During the visit, Al Tayer reviewed several projects covering power asset management, network automation, laboratory testing, equipment inspection and technical training. The projects form part of DEWA’s wider efforts to strengthen Dubai’s electricity infrastructure as demand continues to grow across residential, commercial and industrial areas.
One of the projects presented during the tour was DEWA’s Asset Health Centre. The centre uses real-time information about the condition of electricity assets, maintenance requirements and operational risks to help technical teams make faster decisions.
The system supports risk-based maintenance and helps DEWA determine when equipment should be repaired or replaced. This approach can reduce asset-related risks while improving the use of maintenance resources across the electricity distribution network.
Al Tayer also reviewed DEWA’s Distribution Automation programme, which uses RF-Mesh communication technology to connect parts of the distribution network with control centres.
The technology allows DEWA teams to remotely monitor and control network equipment. It also supports the authority’s wider Smart Grid programme by helping operators respond more quickly to network conditions and maintain electricity supply reliability.
The visit also covered DEWA’s technical laboratories at the Al Ruwayyah complex.
The Distribution Asset Management Cable Lab operates under ISO/IEC 17025:2017 accreditation. It carries out cable testing and supports technical work including fault analysis, quality checks and cable lifecycle assessment.
These services help engineers identify the causes of cable problems, assess equipment condition and make decisions on maintenance and replacement.
Al Tayer also reviewed the Energy Meter Testing Lab, which tests electricity meters and current transformers. The laboratory provides testing services that support DEWA projects and electricity connections in Dubai.
Another technology presented during the visit was the use of X-ray inspection for capacitor bank circuit breakers.
According to DEWA, it is the first electricity utility in the world to use this X-ray inspection method for examining capacitor bank circuit breakers without damaging the equipment or affecting its operation.
The inspection process allows engineers to examine internal components and identify possible defects before they develop into larger equipment failures. Early detection can help reduce maintenance risks and limit potential interruptions to electricity services.
Al Tayer said continued investment in research, development and employee-led innovation has helped DEWA introduce new methods for managing critical electricity infrastructure.
The authority is increasingly using operational data, advanced analytics and digital systems to assess the condition of electricity assets and support decisions on inspection, maintenance and replacement.
The visit concluded with a review of DEWA’s Mobile Training Unit, which provides safety and operational training directly to teams working in the field.
More than 9,200 employees received training through the Mobile Training Unit between 2021 and 2025.
DEWA continues to expand and modernise Dubai’s electricity network as the emirate records continued population, business and infrastructure growth. The authority is also increasing the use of automation, data analysis and smart grid technologies to improve network reliability and support Dubai’s future electricity requirements.
