Day 1 of Economic Research Forum Explores 4IR and AI's Role in Transforming GCC Cities
Dubai: The Economic Research Forum kicked off its seminar on “The Potential of the Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR) for Economic Transformation in GCC Countries” at the Mohammed Bin Rashid School of Government (MBRSG) in Dubai. The event gathered top experts and policymakers from the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) and across the globe to discuss how emerging technologies like Artificial Intelligence (AI) and smart industries can shape the future of cities in the region.
The Role of 4IR in Economic Growth
Hosted by MBRSG, the seminar is focused on understanding how 4IR can drive the economic transformation of GCC countries. Topics include smart cities, advanced labor markets, and entrepreneurship, with experts sharing insights on how technologies such as AI, the Internet of Things (IoT), and digital twins can revolutionize various sectors, from energy to tourism.
Dr. Ibrahim Elbadawi, Managing Director of the Economic Research Forum, emphasized the importance of discussing 4IR’s potential. “This platform allows us to explore how technological advancements can reshape our cities and economies, ensuring growth and development across the GCC,” he stated.
UAE’s Commitment to Industry 4.0
Dr. Ali bin Sebaa Al Marri, Executive President of MBRSG, highlighted the UAE’s active role in embracing 4IR. The UAE’s Fourth Industrial Revolution Strategy aims to position the country as a global leader in adopting advanced technologies, which will contribute significantly to the national economy and boost innovation. “Our collaboration with global research centers aligns with our vision to drive innovation and sustainability through 4IR technologies,” Al Marri said.
Industry 4.0 and AI in Key Sectors
The first session of the forum focused on how Industry 4.0 and AI can promote economic diversification in the GCC. Experts discussed the impact of these technologies on energy and tourism, demonstrating how they enhance sustainability and improve user experiences.
Dr. Isabelle Galy from OTESIA in France opened the session, followed by a panel discussion with experts from Qatar University, Newcastle University, and the International Trade Centre, among others. The session explored AI’s role in improving efficiency and driving innovation in critical industries.
Entrepreneurship in the 4IR Era
Another key session explored entrepreneurship in the GCC within the 4IR landscape. Speakers analyzed how advanced technologies are creating new business opportunities and driving entrepreneurial growth. The session also reviewed success stories from global markets like BRICS countries, providing valuable lessons for the GCC.
Panelists, including leaders from the Sharjah Entrepreneurship Centre (Sheraa) and Prince Mohammed Bin Salman College of Business and Entrepreneurship, discussed the readiness of GCC entrepreneurs to adopt Industry 4.0 technologies.
Smart Cities as Economic Catalysts
The day concluded with a session on smart cities, where experts examined how these cities can foster economic growth and improve the well-being of residents. Dr. Fateh Belaid from Saudi Arabia’s KAPSARC led the session, discussing his book Smart Cities and highlighting how sustainable urban development can be a game-changer for the GCC region.
With day one wrapping up, the forum set the stage for further discussions on how 4IR technologies can transform the GCC’s economic landscape in the coming years.
