Big Surprises at World Pool Championship in Jeddah

Jeddah: The World Pool Championship 2025 has started with exciting and unexpected results in Jeddah. This is the second year in a row that Saudi Arabia is hosting the tournament.
A total of 128 players from more than 40 countries are competing in this international event, which is taking place at the Green Halls and will continue until July 26.
So far, 64 players have moved on to the next stage after playing in early matches. On Thursday, the round of 64 and round of 32 matches will begin at 1:00 p.m. Each match will be a race to 11 points.
Some well-known players were knocked out earlier than expected:
- Aloysius Yapp from Singapore, ranked number 2 in the world, lost to AJ Manas from the Philippines with a score of 9–6.
- Fedor Gorst from the United States, the current world champion, defeated Francesco Candela from Italy 9–5.
- Saudi player Mohammed Baabbad lost to Austria’s Max Lechner 9–1.
- Carlo Biado from the Philippines, the 2017 world champion, won against Lee Van Corteza, also from the Philippines, 9–4.
- Saudi player Fahad Al-Dhayan beat Khalid Al-Ghamdi, another Saudi competitor, 9–6.
More surprising results came when other champions were eliminated:
- Joshua Filler from Germany, the 2018 champion, lost to Jani Uski from Finland 9–5.
- Thorsten Hohmann from Germany, a two-time world champion, lost to Wojciech Szewczyk from Poland 9–3.
- Ko Pin-Yi from Taiwan, another two-time world champion, was defeated by Bernie Regalario from the Philippines.
The early rounds have been full of upsets, with several top players already out of the tournament. Fans are excited to see who will win as the World Pool Championship in Jeddah moves into the next stage.
