Balsam Index Launches to Set Global Standards for Arabic AI Models

RIYADH: The King Salman Global Academy for Arabic Language has introduced the Balsam Index, a cutting-edge tool designed to evaluate and measure large language models for the Arabic language. The launch was announced on Friday during the prestigious 3rd Global AI Summit (GAIN) held in Riyadh.

Developed in collaboration with the Saudi Data & AI Authority and international experts, the Balsam Index aims to establish global benchmarks for evaluating AI models in Arabic language tasks. This innovative index will be instrumental in assessing the latest AI models and guiding future enhancements by adding new features and capabilities, according to an official press release.

Speaking at a key session on AI models in Arabic, Abdullah bin Saleh Al-Washmi, Secretary-General of the King Salman Global Academy for Arabic Language, highlighted the importance of integrating artificial intelligence in preserving the future of the Arabic language. Al-Washmi emphasized that while written languages have historically endured over time, the future of languages like Arabic will increasingly depend on successful AI integration.

Al-Washmi also praised the ongoing support of Minister of Culture, Prince Badr bin Abdullah bin Farhan, who serves as Chairman of the Academy’s Board of Trustees. He acknowledged the crucial role of the Balsam Index in aligning with Saudi Vision 2030’s goals, particularly in the realm of human development and cultural preservation.

The introduction of the Balsam Index marks a significant milestone in the development of AI technologies tailored for the Arabic-speaking world. It represents a major step forward in enhancing the capabilities of Arabic language AI models and ensures their global competitiveness.
