Dubai – At the Arab Media Summit 2025, Sheikh Hasher bin Maktoum bin Juma Al Maktoum spoke about how media in Dubai has changed over the years and what it needs to do to grow in the future.

He shared his memories from when the Dubai media office had just two people, including himself. Back then, there was only one weekly newspaper called Dubai News. Over time, and with the support of leaders like Sheikh Rashid bin Saeed Al Maktoum, media in Dubai expanded to include TV and daily newspapers like Al Bayan.

Speaking at the forum, Sheikh Hasher said that media used to be about passion and hard work. He remembered waking up early to plan news stories and working late into the night. He warned that traditional media, like newspapers and TV, are losing ground because of fast digital growth. To stay relevant, he said media teams need to learn new technology and focus on quality.

He also advised young journalists to focus on one area like sports, politics, or the economy to improve their skills and provide better stories. He asked the next generation to read more, do original research, and avoid copying others.

“Media should not only aim to make money,” he said. “It should also help society and culture grow.”

Another session at the event featured Emirati director Matrook Nasser. He spoke about his early days in filmmaking, starting with a teacher who noticed his talent. After studying cinema in the UK, he worked with international teams and started his own company in Dubai.

Nasser said it’s not enough to just call yourself a director you have to learn everything about making a film, including lighting, editing, and sound. He added that AI is helping filmmakers work faster and be more creative.

He encouraged young people in the UAE to be patient, keep learning, and create stories that show Dubai’s real spirit and culture.

The Arab Media Summit continues to be a space for sharing ideas and building a strong future for media in the region.
