Abu Dhabi Airport Unveils Biometric Smart Travel for Seamless Passenger Experience

Abu Dhabi Airports is revolutionizing the travel experience at Zayed International Airport with the implementation of a cutting-edge biometric Smart Travel project. This initiative, developed in partnership with the Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs, and Port Security (UAEICP), leverages advanced biometric technology to streamline the travel process while maintaining robust security protocols.

Biometric Authentication for Faster and Smoother Travel

The Smart Travel project utilizes a phased approach to integrate biometric authentication systems throughout the airport. Existing databases will be tapped into for automatic traveller verification, eliminating the need for pre-registration for departing passengers. This translates to significantly reduced processing times, with travellers expected to move through security checkpoints in just seven seconds – a dramatic improvement from the previous 25 seconds.

Enhanced Security and Convenience

“We are committed to providing world-class services to our passengers,” said Andrew Murphy, Chief Information Officer at Zayed International Airport. “The Smart Travel project exemplifies this commitment by offering a seamless and efficient travel experience while upholding the highest security standards.”

The initial phase of the project, launched in November 2023 alongside the opening of the new terminal, features automated traveller registration, self-service baggage drop-off, and facial recognition technology at boarding gates and e-gates. Future plans include expanding the system to cover check-in areas for five additional airlines, all boarding gates, and transit areas with new e-gates. Additionally, the Etihad Airways lounge and duty-free stores are slated for integration in the upcoming phases.

Collaboration for a Streamlined Future

This collaborative effort between Abu Dhabi Airports and UAEICP positions Zayed International Airport at the forefront of travel innovation. “The Biometric Smart Travel project fosters a smoother travel experience from arrival to departure, while prioritizing passenger safety and security,” remarked Saeed Saif Al Khaili, General Director at UAEICP. He further emphasized the project’s benefits for airlines, including reduced infrastructure needs and enhanced fraud detection capabilities.

The implementation of biometric Smart Travel marks a significant step towards a more efficient and secure travel experience for passengers flying through Abu Dhabi International Airport.
